The Seminar for Art History and Film Studies at the institute of Art- and Cultural Studies in Jena offers the only such combination in entire Germany. Having been integrated within Art Studies since 2006, this professorship engages in the study of film, photography, and audiovisual media. Film studies in Jena focuses on different core areas, which are also reflected in courses offered at the institute: theory and aesthetics of film, historicity and social practices of film and other media, the relationship between images and moving images in the context of artistic practice, the audiovisual representations of the Holocaust, and possibilities of empirical film analysis.
Course subjects include, but are not limited to:
- Introduction to the methods and theories of film studies
- Introduction to the processes of film- and media analysis
- Aesthetics and poetics of genre-, documentary- and experimental films in the international context
- Politics and art (political aesthetics, gender, intersectionality, film and globalization)
