If you are learning Latin, Ancient Greek, English and French in school, it helps immensely to be enthusiastic about cultures and languages ​​in order to master the sometimes less attractive aspects of learning a language. You deal with past and present worlds and cultures, reflect on and understand what is “your own” on many levels differently by dealing with the “other”. This change of perspective, the questioning of the everyday as well as the investigation of the emergence of certainties, led me to Cultural Anthropology/ Cultural History.

Anyone who hears or reads about the Black Forest inevitably thinks of the red traditional hat with pompons made of red wool ("Bollenhut"), its trademark.
What is less common, however, is that the Bollenhut was historically only worn as a traditional costume in three small villages in the Black Forest, before it became the region's globally present symbol of recognition today. In my dissertation project, I am investigating the genesis of this specific, landscape symbol, which can be found again and again in (self-) representations such as homeland literature, homeland film, advertising and festival productions. How, by what and why are certain symbols or logos created within a regionalization process that evoke desired associations, advertise for tourist purposes and become a recognition feature or unmistakable sign and flagship of a region?
