Vom 09. bis 12. Oktober 2023 veranstaltet der Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena die internationale Tagung “To tear these images from time”: Exploring Visual Representations from Nazi Camps, Ghettos, and the Holocaust.
Im Zentrum der Tagung steht die Frage, wie die NS-Verbrechen und der Holocaust in Bildern, die unter extremen Bedingungen in nationalsozialistischen Lagern und Ghettos sowie unmittelbar nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entstanden, dargestellt wurden. Trotz ihrer überwiegend realistischen Bildsprache sprechen diese Bilder nicht für sich selbst; sie benötigen eine Analyse hinsichtlich ihrer Motivwahl, künstlerischen Mittel, Komposition und Formensprache. Über 20 Professor:innen, Kurator:innen und Nachwuchwissenschaftler:innen aus neun verschiedenen Ländern (Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Israel, Litauen, Polen, Rumänien, Schweiz, Ungarn, USA) werden das vielfältige Potenzial analytischer Zugänge zu Zeichnungen, Skulpturen, Alben, Gemälden und anderen visuellen Artefakten untersuchen, die vor oder kurz nach der Befreiung entstanden.
Die Tagung ist Teil des DFG-Projekts „Jenseits der Undarstellbarkeit. Bildkünstlerische Artefakte von KZ-Häftlingen als visuelle Deutung der Lagerwirklichkeit“ von Prof. Dr. Verena Krieger und Ella Falldorf und eine Kooperation mit der Stiftung Gedenkstätten Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora.
Die Veranstaltung findet vom 09. bis 11. Oktober 2023 im Kleinen Rosensaal der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität, Fürstengraben 27, Jena und am 12. Oktober im Tagungshaus der Gedenkstätte Buchenwald statt. Um eine Anmeldung per E-Mail wird gebeten: ella.falldorf@uni-jena.de.

From October 09 to 12, 2023, the Chair of Art History at Friedrich Schiller University Jena will host the international conference "To tear these images from time": Exploring Visual Representations from Nazi Camps, Ghettos, and the Holocaust.
The conference will focus on the question of how Nazi crimes and the Holocaust were depicted in images created under extreme conditions in Nazi camps and ghettos as well as immediately after World War II. Despite their predominantly realistic imagery, these images do not speak for themselves; they require analysis in terms of their choice of motif, artistic means, composition, and formal language. More than 20 professors, curators, and emerging scholars from nine different countries (France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States) will explore the diverse potential of analytical approaches to drawings, sculptures, albums, paintings, and other visual artifacts created before or shortly after liberation.
The conference is part of the DFG project "Beyond the Limits of Representation. Artistic Artifacts of Concentration Camp Inmates as Visual Interpretation of the Camp Reality" by Prof. Dr. Verena Krieger and Ella Falldorf and a cooperation with the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation.
The event will take place from October 09 to 11, 2023 in the small Rose Hall (kleiner Rosensaal) of the Friedrich Schiller University, Fürstengraben 27, Jena and on October 12 in the seminar building of the Buchenwald Memorial.
